Abstract
Eleanor Houston-Smith donated Wolfe's Neck Farm in Freeport to the University of Southern Maine in 1968. The organic beef farm, with 600 acres in Freeport and pasture land in Brunswick, has created problems with neighbors, who have had to deal with loose cows. Some neighbors have questioned why USM is in the beef farming business when it does not have an agriculture department. Mark Lapping of USM said the farm can provide an understanding of how rural lands in general might be managed in a more ecologically sensitive way, and that it is particularly useful for public policy students researching sustainable agriculture.
