Abstract

Maine Senate President Jeffrey Butland said he will introduce legislation seeking a referendum on the widening of the Maine Turnpike, and that he won't withdraw the bill even if transportation alternatives are endorsed the state Legislature's Transportation Committee and the Maine Turnpike Authority. The Natural Resources Council of Maine will not say that it is totally opposed to a widening, saying that it wants to see more data on alternatives. Legislation introduced by Butland to preauthorize $100 million in bonds in anticipation of the widening is currently before the Legislature's Transportation Committee.
