Abstract

The New England Fisheries Management Council has instituted new policies to reduce the bycatch rate for porpoise in sink gillnets, and has established a maximum number of porpoises that might be taken without reducing the population. The U.S. porpoise population is currently being nominated for inclusion as a threatened species under the federal Endangered Species Act. The highest take on the eastern seaboard occurs off the New Hampshire coast, an area used by Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts fishermen. Details.
