Abstract
Biologist John Hagan of the Monomet Observatory in Massachusetts has concluded that several species of birds in Maine's north woods are using large clearcuts, and that old growth forests do not provide any unique benefits to birds. Hagan and foresters from S.D. Warren and Bowater are involved in a ten-year project designed to maintain a self-sustaining population of plants and animals while allowing sustainable harvests of timber in industrial forests. The project uses the concept of the shifting mosaic, which would move harvest operations over the land and allow plants and animals to follow the successional stages upon which they depend. Details.
