Abstract
Boise Cascade Corp. last week announced the sale of its Rumford mill and more than 500,000 acres of Maine timberland to The Mead Corp. of Ohio. The sale is part of a trend that began nearly ten years ago, when millions of acres of the state's forests were sold. Public concern about proposed development in the north woods led to the creation of the Northern Forests Land Council, a federal agency that studied land fragmentation, declining public access and forest health in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and New York. Boise Cascade participated in the negotiations leading to the Compact for Maine's Forests, and Mead supports the compact. Details.
