Abstract

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently decided to ban propargite and dicofol, two pesticides used to control mites on apples. Orchards in Maine have moved towards a system of Integrated Pest Management, which uses natural control methods and chemical pesticides as a last resort. The loss of the two pesticides means a reliance on a third pesticide, formetanate, which kills not only mites but the insects that prey upon them. Paul Gregory of the Maine Pesticide Control Board said using formetanate contradicts the whole thrust of IPM, and growers might have to use more pesticide as a result.
