Abstract

The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association received 123 applications for its farming apprenticeship program this year, and most applicants were under age 26. Willow Pond Farm in Sabattus has been hosting apprentices since 1989, and three 19-year-old women are now one month into the apprentice program. Willow Pond owner Jill Agnew takes people on because she needs a hand on the farm, but also because training fits weel with the organic growing ethic. A shortage of farmland in Maine is one reason that many people entering into organic farming choose to do so through an apprenticeship. Details, related articles.
