Abstract

The oil spill resulting from the oil tanker Julie N striking the Portland Bridge is still being evaluated, but early estimates are that it could have been much worse. Significant damage to marshes in the Fore River might have been averted because tall spartina grass acted as a barrier, and few sea birds were present. The Exxon Valdez disaster resulted in the creation of an oil spill commission, and prompted oil companies to create the Marine Spill Response Corp. Al Prysunka, former director of the Maine Department of Environmental Protection's bureau of hazardous materials, said it is up to the oil industry to do more to ensure effective response to oil spills.
