Abstract
Barnes & Noble opened its 30,000-square-foot superstore in Augusta in November 1995, and is said to be looking at a space in the Maine Mall for another store. Borders has a 30,000-square-foot superstore next to the Maine Mall, and another superstore in Bangor. Bookland of Maine responded to the super bookstores by closing some stores and opening superstores of its own, while Gulf of Maine Bookstore of Brunswick elected not to play the big-time retail game and has carved out a distinctive niche for itself. Steve Cogil of SLC Enterprises of Southwest Harbor, a national bookstore consultant, said the best way to respond to the superstores is to ignore them while paying attention to your own business.
