Abstract
The Kennebec Journal of Augusta is transferring its State House reporter to the Augusta newsroom, and other staffers will cover state government. Nobody at the Associated Press' Washington bureau could think of another daily newspaper in a state capital that operates without a State House bureau. Circulation at the Kennebec Journal has decreased from 20,000 in the 1980s to 17,000 currently, and news reporting positions have gone from 11 down to 7.5. Veteran newswatchers in the state believe the paper is making a mistake by eliminating its State House bureau. Details.
