Abstract

Superior Court justice Nancy Mills last week ruled that Sally Morrison of Waldoboro, a midwife, was not guilty of criminal recklessness in connection with the 1995 home birth of Lauren Bouyea. Morrison was charged for administering two homeopathic remedies to the newborn just after birth. Mills concluded that the state had proved that Morrison's conduct created a substantial risk of serious bodily injury to the infant, but ruled that the state had not proved beyond a reasonable doubt that the midwife acted recklessly.
