Abstract

State representative David Shiah, D-Bowdoinham, is sponsoring legislation that would ban commercial and residential development in five areas encompassing more than four million acres of Maine's north woods. The bill would accomplish what the Maine Land Use Regulation Commission failed to do in its recent comprehensive plan for the unorganized territories. The measure is backed by the Maine Audubon Society, the Natural Resources Council of Maine, Restore: The North Woods, the Forest Ecology Network and other groups. William Vail of the Maine Forest Products Council said the bill attempts to use zoning to take private property rights. Details.
