Abstract

Second in a three-part series on the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. The struggle over the creation of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway in the 1960s was one of the locals against the federal government, and when it was over the Allagash had a less ambitious protection plan than the one proposed by federal authorities. Some conservationists say the state's protection plan contributed to the erosion of the waterway's wilderness character. Federal authorities wanted to acquire 246,500 acres of land, but state legislators decreased state ownership to 22,840 land acres to please landowners.
