Abstract
Paula Moore of the University of Maine at Orono's Center for Early Literacy says reading to a young child has as much to do with nurturing as it does with literacy. Moore and fellow researcher Anne Rhodes-Kline recently published "Literacy Learning: Are Maine First Graders Meeting Our Expectations?" The study found that by the end of the first grade the typical Maine student can read fairly long texts with challenging and specialized vocabulary. Moore believes both phonics and whole language approaches to teaching are valuable.
