Abstract

Maine Department of Marine Resources Commissioner Robin Alden believes that cod in the Gulf of Maine are threatened by the closure of the Georges Bank. A stock assessment of cod in the Gulf of Maine confirmed fears that cod mortality is too high. Estimates are that if catch rates on gulf cod remain at the 1996 level in 1997 and 1998, landings in 1999 will decline by 45 percent. The New England Fishery Management Council did not recommend any new closures during its August meeting. Details.
