Abstract
Profile of state senator Susan Longley, D-Liberty, Senate chairwoman of the Maine Legislature's Judiciary Committee. Longley reviewed six bills relating to Indian affairs during her first year as chairwoman, and is at the center of an effort to restore the peace between the state and its two Indian tribes. The Passamaquoddy Tribe and the Penobscot Nation charge that the state is violating the spirit of the 1980 federal Indian Land Claims Settlement Act by assuming a narrow legal interpretation. The tribes are involved in mounting litigation and a series of standoffs with the state. Details.
