Abstract

A group called Mediation First, composed of four professional mediators, has brought conflict intervention programs to nearly 50 schools in Maine. Two of these mediators, Kate Neale and Debbie Belanger, also have backgrounds in public education. One of the tools they use to sell the program to public school officials is a study by Dr. Tricia Jones of Temple University, who found that the program is most effective when introduced in elementary schools, and when mediation is voluntary rather than forced. This article focuses on the program at Lyman Moore Middle School in Portland where students interviewed explain why they are believers in peer mediation.
