Abstract

A 911,000 acre parcel of former S. D. Warren forest land that is for sale by new owner Sappi, which stands for South African Pulp & Paper, is prompting a lot of questions throughout the forest community, and the company is trying to answer them. Company spokesperson Melanie Otero said Sappi is not subdividing. The company will sell to one owner who is experienced in managing timberland and who will follow the Maine Forest Practices law. But Otero would not divulge the names of interested parties. According to a company statement, Sappi is divesting the land to concentrate on its core manufacturing business of making coated paper products. Cathy Johnson of the Natural Resources Council of Maine said the Sappi sale proves that multi-national paper companies have no long-term loyalty to the people of Maine.
