Abstract

A parcel of 222 acres in Harpswell, land purchased with Gov. Percival Baxter's money, has been treated as part of the Scientific Forest Management Area, designed to show the community how a careful harvest can improve forest and wildlife habitat. The Baxter Park Authority's decision to begin timber management on the land, untouched since it was purchased in 1969, has irked residents. The acreage reaches from Route 24 across Doughty Cove to Long Reach. The authority plans to do conservative selective harvesting, and hopes to convert the residents to "believers."
