Abstract
Independent movie theaters in Maine are fighting back against national chains like Hoyts, which runs half of the screens in the state. A look at the survival tactics of three downtown theaters: Belfast's Colonial Theatre, which opened in 1912; Farmington's Narrow Gauge Cinema; and Brunswick's Eveningstar Cinema, which is the only one of the three in direct competition with Hoyt's. Eveningstar's owner, John Favreau, is trying to form a coalition of independent theater owners to get legislation passed that will outlaw "clearance zones" that stipulate that a movie can be shown at only one theater in a given market.
