Abstract

The Baker Island Light, built in 1828 and automated in 1967, is today obscured to lobstermen and boaters because of the red spruce and white spruce which have taken hold in the abandoned fields on the 167-acre island. The University of Maine and the National Park Service are studying forestry patterns and the historic landscape to try to determine how much of the new vegetation should be removed to make the lighthouse more visible to boaters and others.
