Abstract

"Maine Perspectives" piece mentioning Kyle Jones, a two-term Democrat from Bar Harbor who has chaired the Utilities Committee, but who withdrew from the House to spend more time with his family and his law practice. The unintended consequence of term limits has been to give more sway to the governor and to lobbyists who have longevity in the Legislature. Despite Jones's accelerated schedule, most members of the Legislature don't have enough time to be elected to and mature into positions of power. Limiting terms to six terms rather than four might be more practical.
