Abstract
The Salt Center for Documentary Studies in Portland has been conducting accredited, semester-long programs for graduate and undergraduate students since 1982. Students document Maine life through photographs and narrative essays, the central disciplines of the school. The best of these works are published in the center's magazine, Salt. Founder and director Pamela Wood first established the program at Kennebunk High School, and historian Hugh French has helped direct Salt since 1982. With information on the directors, students, and the process of "taking academic scholarship, and field research . . . and presenting [it] as a photographic essay or written essay."
