Abstract
Three of Maine's 12 rabbis are women: Susan Bulba Carvutto of Augusta, a Reform rabbi; Ruth Smith of Bath, a Reconstructionist rabbi; and Carolyn Braun of Portland, a Conservative rabbi. The three meet weekly. They say that the low proportion of Jews in Maine has created a sense of community among the state's dozen rabbis, and that shared Maine values seem to transcend gender issues. This solidarity in diversity was demonstrated at the June 16 Hadassah tea at the Blaine House, organized in part by first Lady Mary Herman. The three rabbis were invited as guest speakers, educating their listeners about the history of women in each branch of Judaism. With profiles, and information on Judaism in Maine.
