Abstract
The sale of the Guy Gannett newspapers to The Seattle Times Co. last week is being touted as a perfect fit. Skip Berger, editor-in-chief of an alternative newspaper, the Seattle Weekly, says The Seattle Times packages news to get the attention of awards committees at the expense thoroughly coverage. Both the Gannett papers and the Times practice "public journalism" in which they organize community forums around local issues and report the dialogue as an incentive for decision-making. Both also practice advocacy journalism and have been accused of boosterism.
