Abstract
The U.S. Senate has passed a highway bill amendment supported by U.S. senator Olympia Snowe that exempts Maine and New Hampshire from penalties for violating current weight limits on interstate highways. The bill also calls for a study to determine if all of I-95 in Maine should allow trucks in excess of 80,000 pounds. Maine Department of Transportation Commissioner John Melrose has long resisted federal efforts to ban heavy trucks from the Maine Turnpike, saying to do so would put Maine at a competitive disadvantage.
