Abstract

Four people have been named as the leading candidates to replace outgoing Department of Agriculture commissioner Ed McLaughlin: Dave Lavway of Presque Isle, a former director of the Maine Potato Board; Bob Spear of Nobleboro, a dairy farmer and four-term state representative; Adrian Wadsworth of Turner, a dairy farmer; and John Harker, a development project officer within the department. Officials of the Maine Farm Bureau, the Agriculture Council of Maine and the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association all agree that McLaughlin's replacement must be qualified, experienced and a strong advocate for agriculture. The new commissioner will take over a department hard hit by budget cuts during the first King administration.
