Abstract

The 1993 spring survey of groundfish in the Gulf of Maine indicates that stocks of cod, haddock and flounder are down while dogfish and skates, considered to be "trash" fish, are accounting for a larger percentage of the catch. An official with the Northeast Fisheries Science Center in Woods Hole, Mass., says it might be desirable to reduce the numbers of low-value species to restore the high-value groundfish.
