Abstract

The University of Maine at Orono will pay a $14,000 fine and spend $2,500 on a chemical hygiene safety training program for 450 safety violations found by the Department of Labor. The university could have received up to a $1,000 fine per violation, indicating most were not serious enough to warrant the full penalties. This was the first comprehensive review in five years, and most violations were repeated in several facilities, such as lack of eyewash stations and evacuation plans. With related editorial.
