Abstract
"News & Issues" piece on the new management plan for the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, which opened John's Bridge as a hand-carry put-in to the waterway. Conservation Commission staff people were opposed to opening John's Bridge, but Commissioner Ron Lovaglio and two of Maine's most effective political strategists, George Smith of the Sportsman's Alliance of Maine and state representative John Martin (D-Eagle Lake), supported it. For many it represented a litmus test of how serious the conservation department is about protecting the waterway. Jon Luoma, the National Resource Council of Maine's representative on the Bureau of Parks and Lands 23-member citizens' advisory committee, said Lovaglio's decision to overrule his staff was politically motivated and that prompts him to question the state's commitment to manage land for wilderness.
