Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on LD 2239, An Act to Ensure Civil Rights and Prevent Discrimination, which would put sexual orientation back into the Maine Human Rights Act. LD 2239 is actually a compilation of six bills that were submitted last year addressing equal rights for gays and lesbians, and it has been put off until next year, which supporters admit is practical, since the new bill is 12 pages long and will amend every section of the Human Rights Act. Portland Democratic Reps. Michael Saxl and Michael Quint, and Rep. Robert Stanwood, R-Bar Harbor, all co-sponsors, say the holdover is appropriate in the interest of giving the bill the hearing it deserves.
