Abstract
Editorial on the dismissal of Allagash Wilderness Waterway manager Tim Caverly, noting it will be difficult to determine whether he was terminated for sex discrimination, insubordination or advocacy of wilderness values. The editorial laments the fact that conservation interests have less apparent support at the Legislature than at any time in memory. This is due in part because Gov. Angus King has forgotten that a balance of human uses includes some areas where there is little use at all, and these are called wilderness areas. Even as we consider spending $50 million on land purchases, the only permissible object is to retain existing public use and prevent full-scale development.
