Abstract
"News & Issues" piece on LD 1078, An Act to Extend Term Limits, which would have lengthened the consecutive time legislators could serve from eight to 12 years. The bill failed by a single vote in the Maine Senate, with Sen. Peter Mills, R-Cornville, in voting in opposition. After listening to floor speeches, Mills decided the bill, in combination with another increasing legislators' salaries, looked too self-serving. Because the bill passed in the House, it can be brought back on "veto day," when House Majority Leader Michael Saxl, D-Portland, predicts the vote is likely to be close in both chambers.
