Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on a citizens advisory committee that is crafting new management proposals for the Bureau of Parks and Lands (BPL) and is considering adding wilderness areas and ecological reserves. The wilderness proposal as newly conceived would allow hunting and fishing and has the support of the Sportsman's Alliance of Maine. Timber harvesting would still be prohibited, and exisitng motorized access would be phased out over time. The reserves issue is more complex but certain areas within BPL lands, most over 1,000 acres, have been identified as being suitable for designation in a study conducted by the Maine Forest Biodiversity Project. With comments by government officials, academics and leaders of several environmental groups including North Maine Woods, Natural Resources Council of Maine and Restore: the North Woods.
