Abstract

"Maine Perspectives" piece in which Douglas Rooks discusses the merits and demerits of digital television and considers whether or not he will support the upcoming referendum that would provide Maine Public Broadcasting with $9.4 million to convert to digital television. This is, perhaps, the first referendum on the issue in the nation. Rooks points out that the cost of conversion is actually much more than is immediately apparent because Maine television watchers will ultimately have to purchase expensive new sets at a cost he estimates at around $800 million. Before voting for the referendum, Rooks wants to be assured that the poor and the elderly will be able to afford to keep watching.
