Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on a third forest practices referendum that some conservationists are trying to place before Maine's voters next year. Jonathan Carter, head of the Forest Ecology Network, who directed two previous efforts to ban clear-cutting in the Maine woods, said about 500 volunteers were at polls around the state on Nov. 2 circulating petitons in support of "An Act Regarding Forest Practices." Carter said it's still too early to tell if the 42,101 signatures required were collected. With information about how the new proposal differs from the anti-clear-cutting initiative of 1996.
