Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on the growing importance of the Maine film industry to the state's economy. According to the Maine Film Office, headed by Lea Girardin, more than 30 major film and television projects have been shot, in whole or in part, in Maine since 1986, 20 in just the last four years. The film office estimates the economic impact of film production in the state in 1998 at $32.3 million, a figure that does not include smaller commercial or local projects completed that year. There are today about 400 businesses in Maine that actively identify themselves as part of the Maine film industry. Eric Matheson, a production designer and a member of the Maine Film Commission with an impressive resume of work with Broadway shows and feature and independent films, says Maine production talent equals anything in the country.
