Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on the Eastern Maine Children's Museum in Bangor. It was conceived by a group called Partnerships for Healthy Communities and is taking shape in the former Freese's department store, a gift to the city. Jean Finan, exhibit director, and Reb Haizlip, exhibit designer, are turning ideas into reality. Both are from the south, and they worked together on the Children's Museum of Memphis. Exhibits are being engineered at Display Concepts in Trenton, run by award-winning wildlife carver, Joe Rizzo, whose "baby" is the exhibit "Nature Trails." In "Book Town" on the second floor, children can visit with literary characters from Maine-related books. The facility includes eight exhibit areas, an art studio, sports-themed multi-use space, party rooms, and operations areas. With details on the exhibits and how they are being designed and built.
