Abstract

At a final meeting last week of the state Bureau of Public Lands (BPL) and the advisory Integrated Resource Policy Committee, BPL executive director Tom Morrison agreed that the bureau would consider reserving some land for wilderness, where there would be no management activity, under the plan's "special protection area." The majority of committee members opposed the wilderness designation as unnecessary. Panel representatives from the Natural Resources Council of Maine and Restore: The North Woods pushed for the designation to protect the pure wilderness experience for those who wanted it.
