Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on the bidding war between International Paper (IP) and Finland-based UPM-Kymmene for ownership of Champion International. Mark Wilde, who works for Deutch Banc Alex Brown in New York, correctly anticipated that UPM's bid for Champion might be challenged by IP, the world's largest papermaker, who has a plant in Jay. But Wilde predicts UPM won't give up easily because they want a foothold in Maine. With details about the land holdings involved and why Champion would be good for IP.
