Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on a protest by residents in the town of Warren who are upset with the Maine Department of Transportation's (DOT) $2.4 million widening project, which is scheduled to start along Route 1 next year. Printed signs appearing on trees and at farm stands along Route 1 are the work of Steve Burke, who operates Sirius Graphics in Warren. Local opponents of widening don't want to lose the many shade trees that would come down, and they worry the result will be sprawl, already evident in Waldoboro just to the south. Researchers are trying to determine if DOT has a four-rod right of way through Warren. If it does, DOT can build and pave eight-foot shoulders without taking private land.
