Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on a public radio/TV conference held in June at the University of Maine in Orono. Underwriter credits were among issues discussed with critics claiming Maine Public Radio and its parent, National Public Radio, are on a slippery slope, under pressure to reward program sponsors with commercial-type on-air messages. Russ Peotter, Maine Public Broadcasting's director of marketing and development, said program underwriting has changed in the past 20 years. In the early days of public radio, corporations were philanthropic. But today, underwriters want and expect something in return. Peotter said underwriter credits, a euphemism for advertisements, are probably here to stay.
