Abstract

Commercial fishermen in the Gulf of Maine annually throw overboard millions of pounds of dead or dying fish, worth an estimated $80 million. The bycatch is disposed of either because it is protected by law or is caught incidentally in dragnets, and not only wastes a valuable resource but interferes with fishing operations, kills protected species, causes pollution and interrupts predator-prey dynamics.
