Abstract
"News & Issues" piece on the Bat'kivshchyna, or "Bat" for short, a grossly under-financed, converted fishing trawler from Ukraine, which has been denied space for a reception tent on DiMillo's wharf during the OpSail Maine 2000 weekend July 28-31. The Bat sailed from Kiev last April on a mission to publicize the desperate plight of its home country where thousands of Ukranian children are living with radiation sickness from the 1986 meltdown of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which has not been completely shut down because the country is too poor.
