Abstract
"Cover Story" piece on the tiny Piscataquis County town of Guilford, population 1,800, which is in School Administrative District (SAD) 4. Its schools are among the best in the state, and beginning this fall, they'll pilot a privately funded version of Gov. King's controversial laptop computer plan. High school students in Guilford routinely place near the top in MEA and SAT scores. In a statewide report of last year's MEA averages, Piscataquis Community High is 13th on a list of 118 schools, ranking just below wealthy suburban enclaves like Cumberland, Yarmouth, Falmouth and Cape Elizabeth. With details about how students have prospered under retiring SAD 4 Superintendent Norman Higgins' rigorous new curriculum.
