Abstract
"News & Issues" piece on a U.S. Navy plan to deploy the loudest sound ever put into the sea to detect a new generation of quiet submarines. But Dr. Marsha Green, founder of the Ocean Mammal Institute (OMI), claims the Navy's 240-decibel Low Frequency Active Sonar (LFAS) can kill, deafen and/or disorient whales, dolphins and other marine life, as well as humans in the water. At full strength, LFAS is 10,000 times louder than the roar of the space shuttle rockets. Two lawsuits filed against the Navy challenging its plans to deploy LFAS have been dismissed. With details about how LFAS works and the names of several groups opposing its deployment.
