Abstract
"Feature Story" piece on Roger Gilmore, president of the Maine College of Art (MECA) since 1989. During Gilmore's tenure, the Portland School of Art became MECA, increased enrollment from 240 to 400, operated consistently in the black, increased its meager endowment from $500,000 to $2 million, undertood a bold $13-million initiative to consolidate its facilities under one roof, reached out to the community in major ways through non-degree courses attracting some 2,000 people a year, established the Institute of Contemporary Art, and inaugurated Maine's first Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program.
