Abstract
"Feature Story" piece on Bowdoin, Bates and Colby, three of the top 20 liberal arts colleges in the nation, focusing on the fact that all three will be heading into the 21st century under new leadership. In July, William D. Adams replaced William Cotter as president of Colby College in Waterville. In June, Donald Harward announced that he would retired as president of Bates College in Lewiston in 2002. And a year ago, Robert Edwards announced that he would step down as president of Bowdoin College in Brunswick at the end of the 2001 academic year. With special focus on how these academic leaders assess the social and educational missions of their institutions.
