Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on the 5,000-member Natural Resources Council of Maine (NRCM), which last week announced it was prompted to support Question 2 on the Nov. 7 ballot by continued legislative reluctance to address over-cutting in Maine's woods. It is the first time that the NRCM, which is Maine's largest environmental group, has supported an anti-clear-cutting referendum. The NRCM also proposed an exemption from the referendum's restrictions for all owners of less than 1,000 acres. But the Yes on 2 forces were being out-fundraised $4,400 to $371,000 for opponents of the referendum, according to campaign spending reports filed in July.
