Abstract
"News & Issues" piece on bitterness and disappointment Downeast where a new $20 million state pier in Eastport has yet to produce results for prosperity-hungry Washington County. The two-year-old pier was designed to handle two ships at a time, including the largest on the ocean today. But volume has dropped from a peak of 218,000 tons in the mid-1990s to about 150,000 tons the last few years. State senator Kevin Shorey, R-Calais, is drafting legislation to evaluate the governing structure and effectiveness of the Eastport Port Authority with an aim toward giving the county a say in decisions currently being made solely by Eastport.
